Made Gunawan

Made Gunawan is a painter born in Apuan, Tabanan, Bali, on July 14, 1973. He graduated in Fine Arts from ISI Denpasar. His recent works, with decorative motifs, speak extensively about ecology, which is associated with the concept of Tri Hita Karana—the harmonious relationship between humans and God, with fellow human beings, and with nature (animals and plants).

Since 1995, Gunawan has actively participated in group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Meanwhile, since 1999, he has held solo exhibitions. These include the sketch and painting exhibition “Nungkalik” at the pension, an exhibition at the Hadiprana Gallery in Jakarta (2002), “Women” at Jenggala Ceramics in Jimbaran, Bali, “Melody and Beauty of the Paradise Island” at Hadiprana Gallery Jakarta (2004), an exhibition at Montiq Gallery Jakarta (2007), “Third Solo Exhibition” at Hadiprana Gallery Jakarta (2008), an exhibition at Art Village Gallery Malaysia (2009), Tree of Life at Hadiprana Gallery Jakarta (2014), “Garis Bali” at AMBIENTE Jakarta (2015), and Tree of Life again at Hadiprana Gallery Jakarta (2018).

Gunawan has also produced several performing arts pieces. These include The Golden Chair, performed at the Bali Cultural Park (1997). In 2000, Wayang Visual Arts: The Culture of Violence, Return to the Void was presented in the parking area of Udayana University. The fine arts puppetry piece The Culture of Violence – Ngaben, Return to the Voidwas performed at Ciputra Mall in Semarang, Indonesia. In 2001, Silhouette of Collaborating Women was performed at STSI Denpasar.

Gunawan’s awards in fine arts include Best Sketch at STSI Denpasar (1997), Top Ten Artworks at STSI Denpasar (2001), and recognition as the initiator of 1000 Painting Boxes (Women and Flowers) by the Indonesian Museum of Records (2003).

He has been collaborating with Tobian Art Gallery since 2020, and his work is part of private collections around the world.
